Giants' catcher Bengie Molina on Tuesday was named National League Player of the Week, as reported by Yahoo.com.
Molina posted a .652 batting average, .654 on-base percentage, 15 hits, and six doubles. His 24 total bases and 1.043 slugging percentage tied for the best in baseball.
Vizquel Sets Longevity Mark
Giants' shortstop Omar Vizquel set the major league record for games played at his position Sunday, playing in both games of a doubleheader against the Marlins.
Vizquel raised his games played total to 2,584, passing fellow Venezuelan Luis Aparicio, as reported by Yahoo.com.
Biggio's No. 7 To Be Retired Aug. 17
The Astros will retire Craig Biggio's No. 7 on August 17 as he becomes just the ninth player to have his number set aside by the franchise, according to The Houston Chronicle.
"It's one of the biggest honors you could ever have," Biggio said. "It will be forever. You play the game for a long time, and it doesn't necessarily mean you'll have your number retired, but the way you play the game and things you're able to do and that's going to happen."
"That's one of the greatest feelings you could have as a player is to look up there and see your retired number. I'm very honored," he added.
Griffey Hits Home Run No. 598 In Loss
Cincinnati outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. hit the 598th home run of his Major League career on Thursday night in a loss to San Diego, according to The Associated Press.
The two-run bomb was the first Griffey hit in his last 90 at-bats, the second longest drought of his career. He's close to becoming just the sixth player in history to smack 600 home runs.
"He's swinging the bat pretty good," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He's getting close to getting his stride together. Now we have to get some other guys to get their strokes together."
The Reds have lost four straight games.
Lester Throws No-Hitter In Boston
Jon Lester threw the eighteenth no-hitter in Red Sox history on Monday night as he guided Boston to a 7-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals.
Lester allowed just two baserunners, while striking out nine batters.
Boston enjoyed their last no-hitter on Sept. 1, 2007 when Clay Buchholz posted one in just his second Major League start.
The Red Sox scored five runs in the third inning, and catcher Jason Varitek provided yet another offense spark in the seventh with a two-run home run.
Lester survived cancer to battle back and pitch in the team's World Series-clinching game last fall.
Asdrubal Cabrera Turns Unassisted Triple Play
Cleveland second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera turned the 14th unassisted triple play in Major League Baseball history on Monday night in the team's 3-0 loss to Toronto, according to The Associated Press.
Cabrera made a diving catch of a line drive off the bat of Lyle Overbay, touched second base, and then quickly tagged Marco Scutaro to complete the feat in the fifth inning.
"I was trying to speed up the game," Overbay joked. "I get to go down in history. They can't take that away from me."
"He flipped it into the stands and right as he did cried out, 'Oh, no!'" first-base Coach Luis Rivera said.
"I knew it was pretty special," Cabrera said.
Troy Tulowitzki turned the last unassisted triple play for the Rockies on April 29, 2007.
Sheets Breaks Brewers Franchise Record For K's
Ben Sheets broke Milwaukee's franchise record for strikeouts on Saturday when he fanned a Cardinal hitter in the first inning on Saturday afternoon, according to The Star-Tribune.
He struck out Albert Pujols on an 0-2 pitch to reach 1,082 career strikeouts, surpassing Teddy Higuera.
Sheets is in the final season of a four-year deal with the Brewers and probably would have surpassed Higuera long ago had it not been for numerous injuries.
Lee And Webb Named Pitchers Of The Month
Cliff Lee and Brandon Webb were the Pitchers of the Month for their respective leagues in April.
Lee had a 0.96 ERA and struck out 32 batters while also throwing a complete game shutout on April 24th at Kansas City.
Webb had a 1.98 ERA and struck out 34 batters while posting a 6-0 record.
